Why it might seem that birthdays are placed wrong on the calendar

This Facebook calendar is not an ordinary calendar, and might seem confusing or with dates misplaced at first sight! Here is how it works:

A month for example December has 31 days. So you will see 31 white boxes showing each day of the month (Thursday 1st, Friday 2nd etc). For every white box, all the boxes to the right of it, that have a blue background a with a profile picture, are the the people who have a birthday or other event on that date.

For example you see the box Thursday 15th and to the right of it a blue box with a birthday. This means that that person has a birthday on Thursday 15th (and not 16th as in a normal calendar!).

  • On Saturday 10th, 1 person has a birthday
  • On Tuesday 6th, 3 people have a birthday (the one person to the right of the box, and the two underneath continuing from the previous row)
  • Both on Friday 30th and Saturday 31th there are no birthdays (as there are no pictures to the right of the box).

A common question: why is this calendar layed out this way? The answer is that all dates are scaled so no matter how many people have birthdays on a specific date, all are displayed and no one is hidden. As some dates might have no events, and other dates might have 10 events, the dates are layed out like this so that in all cases, all people will be shown.
